Bike rentals along the Giro d’Italia route 2017
The professional cycling season has started in Europe and the spring classics are on the agenda now. After the classic season will be completed by the end of this month the focus will go to the grand tours. The Giro d’Italia is the first three-week grand tour that is scheduled: It will start on May 5th. This year’s Giro has a wonderful route and we hope it will cause a lot of fun.
The Giro of 2017 will be the 100th edition held and via its route it will emphasize cycling history and culture in Italy. Apart from Italian cycling star Vicenzo Nibali, several foreign contenders will also participate, such as Dutchman Tom Dumoulin, Welshman Geraint Thomas and the American rider Tejay van Garderen.
Bike rental in Italy
Many Italian bike rentals are available for cycling fans who would like to do some cycling in Italy next to following the Giro d’Italia. Alternatively, one could also climb the same hills and mountains that the Giro peloton will climb in May, for example this summer. However, it will likely be a few degrees warmer by then.
Cycling in Sardinia and Sicily
The Giro will start in the northern part of Sardinia on Friday, May 5th, with a stage from Alghero to Olbia. Then, two stages will follow in Sardinia from Olbia to Tortolì and Tortolì to Cagliari. On Go4Bike we can recommend bike rentals in Sardinia that can probably help you finding a suitable bike to explore this beautiful island by bicycle. For example, a well perceived bicycle rental in Cagliari is Ichnusa Bike , that can provide road bikes.
After the start in Sardinia, the Giro continues after a rest / travel day to Sicily. Two stages are on the agenda and not the least! The stage on Tuesday May 9th, starting in Cefalu ends on the slopes of the Etna at an altitude of 1892 meter. It is the first major appointment for the climbers and classification riders. The next day an easier ride on the east coast of Sicily from Pedara to Messina is on the agenda which is probably going to end in a bunch sprint. We can recommend bicycle rentals in Sicily . Maybe you even want to test yourself on a road or mountain bike in the mountain roads around Mount Etna.
Apulia: a real cycling area
The Giro continues via the region of Calabria on May 11th. At Go4Bike a mountain bike rental in Calabria can be found. Thereafter, the Giro Peloton continues to Puglia on May 12th with the arrival in Alberobello, famous for its Trulli (houses with pointed roofs). The beautiful region of Apulia (Puglia) is easier for cycling than the more mountainous regions that the Giro peloton had to cope with so far and still has to endure in the stages to come. The area has many bike rental shops that can help you with any type of bike you want. Besides racing, the Apulia region is also suitable for the more touristic cycling. On Go4Bike you find bike rentals in Apulia .
Mountain biking on the Gargano Peninsula
The next stage starts in Molfeta and will be finishing in Peschici on the north side of the mountainous Gargano peninsula, on the Adriatic coast on May 13th. To explore the peninsula by bike, there are two bike hire spots available that can be found both in Vieste, namely Gargano Bike Holidays and Gargano MTB.
Rent bikes in the Abruzzi
The 9th stage on Saturday May 14th is another major mountain top finish and this time in the Abruzzi. The finish is on the 1674-meter-high Blockhaus, which is a place where Eddy Merckx was victorious in 1968, early in his career. Franco Pellizotti came here to win the stage in 2009, which was the last time the Blockhaus featured in the Giro route. For cycling enthusiasts that would like to cycle in the mountains west of Pescara there are a few bike rental shops in the immediate area, such as Ruota+ and Active Abruzzo.
Via Tuscany to the Alps
After the time-trial between Foligno in Umbria and Montefalco, a stage follows largely in Tuscany from Florence to Bagno di Romagna. In Tuscany there are many bike rentals that can help you exploring this well-known region by bike. This stage is followed by a couple of stages towards the northwest to Reggio Emilia and Tortona that are likely to end up in a bunch sprint. Then in the 14th stage it goes uphill again to Oropa, south of the Swiss border: the Giro has arrived in the Alps! In the 15th stage the Giro peloton rides south of the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland towards Rovetta. The land of the Lake Maggiore and Lake Como is ideal for sportive cycling. A bike rental on Lake Maggiore is for example No Work Team in Arona. You can also look for a rental bike a little further north across the border at Z-Bike Sagl in Lugano or in Locarno Belotti Sport.
Dolomites and finish in Milan
The Giro peloton continues with a series of Alps and Dolomites stages. The queen stage looks to be the 16th stage on Tuesday May 23rd between Rovetta and Bormio. It includes the legendary climbs Mortirolo and Stelvio. After a seemingly less important stage to Canazei the 18th stage follows, which will bring the Giro in the dolomites from Moena to Ortisei. In and around the Dolomites area you will find numerous bike rentals. The Giro concludes with mountain arrivals at Piancavallo and Assiago. Around here you can find bike rentals including Bike Lab Belluno. And finally the Giro ends on May 28th with a time trial from Monza to Milan.
